Chardonnay classification

Written by Mac Forbes on Nov 6th 10

This week has been an exciting and rewarding week.

On Wednesday Tony, Dylan, Manu (2010 vintage cellarhand) and myself tasted through every barrel of Chardonnay from both the Hoddles Creek and Woori Yallock vineyards. The classification is the process whereby each barrel from each vineyard is tasted to determine if it is of the quality to remain single vineyard (depth, purity, focus and intensity) or if it is de-classified into the  Yarra Valley blend (barrels will often display more upfront full, simple character).

2010 is the first vintage of our Hoddles Creek vineyard and along with Woori Yallock we now have two upper yarra sites which display astonishing purity and depth. 2010 as a vintage is incredibly harmonious already and both single vineyard wines look fantastic along with the surprisingly small volume of Yarra Valley.
